Endoscopy has been a useful tool at Gateway Animal Hospital for many years. An endoscope is an instrument that acts as a camera allowing us to visualize your pet’s digestive tract. This is a much less invasive way for us to examine the inside of the stomach, intestine or colon than surgery.
Over the years the endoscope has been used extensively for biopsies in chronic vomiting cases. We also use it for some foreign body cases.
Inflammatory bowel disease is a complex condition that causes vomiting and sometimes diarrhea in dogs and cats. In some instances the condition may progress to cancer. Endoscopic biopsies allow us to make the diagnosis and assess the severity. We may also repeat the procedure to be sure the disease is well controlled by treatment.
